A great villain or monster can make a story more exciting, raise the stakes and give readers a character they will remember long after the story ends.
Join J.H. Ellis for How to Write Villains & Monsters No One Forgets, a live 90-minute online workshop designed for fiction writers who want to create stronger, more believable antagonists.
Rather than relying on one-dimensional or purely evil characters, the workshop explores how villains and monsters can become more compelling when they have clear motivations, beliefs, strengths, weaknesses and personal struggles. Participants will look at how an antagonist’s philosophy can influence their actions and help create greater tension between heroes and the forces working against them.
During the session, writers will explore the seven characteristics of memorable villains and monsters, as well as how world-building can give antagonists distinctive qualities and a stronger role within the story. The workshop will also examine how objectives, motivations and character development can help make villains feel like an essential part of the narrative rather than simply an obstacle for the hero.
The first hour will focus on the characteristics that help villains and monsters drive plot and tension. The final 30 minutes will include a writing sprint, giving participants an opportunity to apply what they have learned directly to their own writing.
Tickets are $30.65.
