278 African-American Students to Be Honored at 2026 5A Awards for Academic Excellence

The Community Academic Achievement Awards Committee (CAAAC), in partnership with Omaha Public Schools, will honor 278 African-American high school seniors during the 2026 5A Awards (African-American Academic Achievement Awards), recognizing scholars who have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 6 p.m. at Northwest High School and will celebrate students whose academic success reflects discipline, perseverance, leadership, and excellence.

The annual 5A Awards serve as one of Omaha’s signature celebrations of Black student achievement, uplifting young leaders who continue to set high standards in the classroom and beyond.

“Our students continue to lead with excellence, and this ceremony is a meaningful celebration of both academic success and the strength our young people bring to this community,” said Dr. Jamar Dorsey Sr., Chair of CAAAC. “The 5A Awards recognize scholastic achievement while affirming the resilience, brilliance, and promise of our students.”

The evening will feature remarks from community leaders, special performances from local youth, and certificate presentations by respected African-American educators, advocates, and professionals from across Omaha. More than an awards ceremony, the event is designed to inspire students through visibility, mentorship, and community encouragement.

CAAAC will also honor 511 Latino students during the Hispanic Academic Challengers of Excellence (HACE) Awards on April 29, 2026, at Buena Vista High School. Together, the HACE and 5A ceremonies reflect the organization’s belief that excellence deserves to be seen, celebrated, and supported.

Middle school students will be recognized separately with Certificates of Accomplishment.
