Film Streams and Nebraska Folklife are teaming up for a unique experience. Film Streams will be streaming the 1996 comedy horror film The Frighteners, followed by a discussion on the importance of history, ghost stories, and lore with panelists from Nebraska Folklife.
The film follows Frank Bannister (played by Michael J. Fox), who has lost his wife in a car accident, but learned that he can communicate with the dead. He uses his gift to con people until a demonic spirit appears threatening both himself and the spirits that work with him.
Panelists include Todd Richardson, Mystery Harwood and Scott Clark.
Richardson is a member of Nebraska Folklife’s Board of Directors and has been published in the Journal of American Folklore, Western Folklore, and co-authored the book “Implied Nowhere: Absence in Folklore Studies.”
Harwood is a folklorist, writer, and teacher. She teaches at Union College in Lincoln, and also serves on the Nebraska Folklife Board of Directors. Their current research explores the intersection between folklore, narrative, and genre, particularly regarding ghosts, witches, and other creatures of horror.
Clark has worked for the Lincoln City Libraries since 1980 and is known as the “keeper of the Starkweather files” for the library system, including adding newly uncovered newspaper and magazine articles about the case. He gave a well-attended public presentation in August 2023, entitled "Revisiting the Starkweather Murder Spree After 65 Years", the video of which will eventually be online.
