Tony Vargas: Public Servant, Advocate, and Community Leader
Tony Vargas has built his life around service, leadership, and the belief that opportunity should be within reach for every family. The son of Peruvian immigrants and a first-generation college graduate, Tony’s journey reflects both the challenges and possibilities of the American Dream.
A former public school teacher and Teach For America alum, Tony began his career in classrooms, shaping young lives and advocating for equity in education. His passion for service led him to the Omaha Public Schools Board of Education, where he worked to strengthen resources for students and families. He later served in AmeriCorps, deepening his commitment to community building and public service.
In 2016, Tony was elected to the Nebraska Legislature, becoming one of the first Latinos to serve in the state’s unicameral body. For seven years, he represented his district with a focus on education, healthcare, workforce development, and fairness for working families. His reputation as a bridge-builder earned him recognition beyond Nebraska, including honors as a Presidential Leadership Scholar (2018), Aspen Institute Fellow, and JCI Ten Outstanding Young American (2017).
Tony has also run for U.S. Congress, carrying the voices of his community onto the national stage. Today, he continues that commitment as Executive Director of a nonprofit organization and candidate for Douglas County Treasurer, where he seeks to bring accountability, equity, and service-driven leadership to county government.
Beyond titles and roles, Tony is a husband, a father, and a public speaker whose story inspires others, especially first-generation students and young professionals of color, to believe in their power to lead.
Tony Vargas represents a generation of Latino leadership in Nebraska rooted in service, justice, and the unwavering belief that communities thrive when everyone has a fair chance to succeed.
