Martin Luther King Jr. & the March on Washington Celebration at Great Plains Black History Museum

The Great Plains Black History Museum invites the community to come together on Saturday, August 23rd, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the historic Jewell Building, 2221 N 24th Street, Omaha, NE, for a powerful gathering in honor of the 62nd anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.

This free, two-hour public commemoration is an opportunity to celebrate, reflect, and inspire. Guests will engage in meaningful conversations about the legacy of the March, the progress we’ve made as a nation, and the work that still lies ahead.

One of the most moving parts of this annual event is a tradition carried on by the Museum for years. As Executive Director Eric Ewing explains:

“At the event, participants are each given a small piece of paper with a portion of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech written on it. One by one, they stand and recite their part aloud. It’s a beautiful and powerful way to hear the speech come alive through many voices in the community.”

This collective reading creates an unforgettable experience, reminding us that Dr. King’s dream was meant to be carried forward by all of us.

We encourage attendees to bring a lawn chair, a friend, and their voice. Together, we’ll honor history, uplift Dr. King’s message, and find inspiration in each other as we recommit to advancing justice and equality.

“Whether you’ve attended in the past or are experiencing it for the first time, this gathering is an opportunity to reflect on our shared past and envision a brighter future,” Ewing said.
