María Arriaga: Cultural Voice and Advocate for Nebraska’s Latino Community

María Guadalupe Arriaga Villagómez, executive director of the Nebraska Commission on Latino-Americans, has built her career at the intersection of culture, communication, and advocacy. A native of Michoacán, Mexico, Arriaga began her professional journey as a radio announcer, a role that ignited her gift for connecting with people and amplifying community voices.

When she moved to the United States, Arriaga continued her broadcasting career, bringing her voice and vision to some of Nebraska’s most influential Spanish-language media outlets. She worked with Radio Lobo, Telemundo, and iHeart’s El Patrón, building more than a decade of experience in media. In each role, she became a trusted voice for Latino audiences, delivering news, culture, and entertainment that reflected their lives and values.

Her academic foundation is just as strong. Arriaga earned a degree in philosophy from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, grounding her approach in reflection, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of human dignity.

Beyond media, Arriaga has been a dedicated force in the nonprofit sector, where her passions for culture, animals, and women’s rights have guided her service. Whether advocating for representation, creating cultural opportunities, or advancing equity, she has consistently sought to empower others and build stronger, more inclusive communities.

Today, as Executive Director of the Nebraska Commission on Latino-Americans, Arriaga stands at the forefront of policy and advocacy for Latino communities statewide. She leads with vision and heart, ensuring that Latino voices are not just heard but respected in government and civic life.

Arriaga’s dedication to amplifying her community’s presence in Nebraska’s civic and cultural landscape has been remarkable.
