Albert Varas: Leading with Vision for Latino Health, Education & Community Unity
Albert Varas currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Latino Center of the Midlands, having first held the role of Executive Director from 2017 to 2020. Since 2021, under his leadership, the organization has expanded strategic partnerships, boosted capacity, and streamlined operations to better serve Omaha’s Latino community.
A Midland University alumnus (class of ’03), Varas brings nearly two decades of experience working with youth, families, education programs, and nonprofit leadership. Before joining the Latino Center, he served in roles such as program development and career advising, often focused on bridging educational access for underserved populations.
At the Latino Center of the Midlands, Varas has championed several bold initiatives. One of the most ambitious is a renovation and expansion of the Center’s headquarters, backed by a $10 million plan to merge facilities and grow services by roughly 50 percent. The goal: ensure that visitors can access complementary programs under one roof. His vision aims to reduce barriers for Latinos seeking education, health, workforce training, and social services.
He also oversaw the modernization of organizational systems. Under his direction, the Latino Center of the Midlands strengthened financial stability, diversified funding sources, and deepened community partnerships across public and private sectors. His role extends beyond management: he also founded Orchard AI, a venture that helps organizations adopt and apply emerging technologies.
In 2023, the Latino Center of the Midlands recorded more than $3.6 million in revenues and employed over 100 staffers, reflecting the scale and significance of its operations in Omaha. Under Varas’s leadership, the Center continues advancing a mission of cultivating education, workforce readiness, and family well-being across Nebraska’s Latino communities.
